Gas ucilisacion. There has been cicy gas usage for many years in Ankara and lscanbul but ehe rapid expansion of an incegraced cransmission syscem and subsequenc conversion of ehe major cicies has broughc many challenges. The benefıcs ofgas is well documented, but for a foreign engineer who has seen Ankara before ehe arrival of natura! gas and ehe cicy coday, ehe cleaner air is something co be proud of. Some comparison is needed becween ehe councries of ehe United Kingdom and Turkey. The U. K. has well over 150 years hiscory ofpiped gas supply and fırsc had natura! gas in 1961 from Algeria chen it's own natura! gas in 1966, Conversion from cicy gas co natura! gas cook 8 years and involved changing 16 million families apartments co use ehe new gas. New gas meters and for ehe fırsc time meter regulators were fıcted. The majority of chese mecers are stili working along wich ehe original regfulacors. The Bricish distribucion pipework system is mainly low pressure for safecy, and wich lower pressures in ehe cicies, leaks are kepe to a low !eve!. in facc many syscems have been developed by Bricish companies wich ehe supporc of Bricish Gas. PE pipowork is now common place but insercing PE chrough old pi pes, machines chac splic casc iron pipes co alloj same size PE co be inserced, and heac shrinking of PE before insertion have ali been developed co rebuild ehe necwork for natura! gas. Where new pipework has been inscalled, narrow crench machines and underground moles have been developed. in concrolling ehe pressures in ehe syscem British Scandards insist on sound engineering. The cype of scacion would usually be active/monicor regulacors in a cwin scream arrangement. Total securicy of supply is given with concrol at ali times. These would be used jhere inlet pressures are 4 bar and reduce down co 300 mbar or 75 mbar. An alcernative syscem in ehe Accive/Slam shuc system (Fig 1). Here ehe gas has no chance of over-pressurising ehe downstream side. This would be very suicable for an aparcment block development where safety is ehe main criceria but noc for a sceel works where loss ofgas co a furnance would involve a loss of produccion. le is worch noting chac ehe stacion design is caken from ehe lowesc inlet pressure for sizing. le is false economy co size correccly at 4 bar inlet pressure but knowing chat inlet pressures can fail co as low as 1 bar - ehe capacicy will simply not be available. Concrol is furcher concrolled co aparcment
